January 2018 Networking Social:
A HEALTHY BRAIN IS A HAPPY BRAIN!
The audience at Coming of Age NYC’s January Networking Social on Brain Plasticity January 30 was treated to an overview of how the brain constantly changes (it’s a mistaken notion that “you can’t teach an old dogs new tricks!”) and how we continue to learn new things to keep those synapses firing. When your synapses are lighting up, you’re more focused and your mind feels electric!
Caroline Kohles, Senior Director of Health and Wellness Programming at JCC Manhattan, offered fun ways to keep our brains sharper and our nerve endings stronger as we age. Just doing a few exercises a day can make a difference. Kohles said we can train our brains by practicing a task over and over. Try practicing putting on your coat on from the opposite side you usually do–you’re training your brain! Bottom line: neuroplasticity is about learning. And the right kind of learning will change the brain for the better!
